Joe's Garage

The Joe's Garage program started as a pilot project in 1999, with support from the Minister of Canadian Heritage, (Urban Multi-Purpose Aboriginal Youth Center Initiative).

The Joe's Garage program seeks to fill a gap in services which has been made visible by the male population that frequent and utilize EGADZ Youth Center. The male youth population has too often been looked over with respect to programs/services, leaving many struggling to deal with issues ranging from low self-esteem to aggressive/abusive and often-violent behaviors. Many of the males show signs of substance, physical and emotional abuse, they wear the scars of self mutilation and appear as shadows in the crowd (followers) with issues that are consistent of low self-esteem.

The program encourages participant involvement through the implementation of expressed ideas based upon their issues and needs. Mentors are utilized to assist the program staff in promoting the program, organizing activities/events, and bringing forth participants input. Participants need to keep in mind that the program components must reflect a variety of positive and healthy activities/events that assist with their mental, physical, cultural and spiritual growth.

The program has seen some significant outcomes for participants as observed by behaviors around the Center, with regard to respect, responsibility and less negative behavior to themselves and others. Youth have accessed other programs and services at EGADZ and in the community such as work readiness, addictions counseling, school assistance, and legal assistance, through support from the program.

So if you are between the ages of 12-19 come on out and let us know what activities you would like to do. We are always looking for new ideas and participants.
